Arkipäivän etsimistä/A search for the everyday

Kesä on alkanut: täällä on useita kesätyöntekijöitä. Silti kaikki täytyy saada tehdyksi ja samaan aikaan uusien ihmisten pitää oppia tuntemaan talo ja rutiinit.Tämä on hyvää aikaa myös minulle oppia tuntemaan paikka.

Kajalakoti on 70 vuotias tänä vuonna.

Klo 8 aamiainen
klo 11:30 lounas
klo 14 kahvi
klo 16 päivällinen
klo 18 iltapala

Herääminen. Vaatteet. Nostaminen. Siivoaminen. Siirtäminen. Sauna. Syöttäminen. Pudonneiden hattujen poimiminen. Kuiviin vaihtaminen. Vessa. Lääkkeistä huolehtiminen. Hampaiden pesu. Raportointi.

Ylläolevista asioista olen nostanut vain pudonneen hatun. En elä päivittäistä rutiinia, vietän aikaani kahden kesken ihmisten kanssa. Miten vältän sen, ettei tapaaminen tunnu pakotetulta? Miten kuuntelen? Mitä teemme? Riippuu.

Olen kiinnostunut paikoista. Mikä maisema on vaikuttavin elämässäsi? Mitä on vapaus?

Onnen salaisuus on vapaus.
Vapauden salaisuus on rohkeus.
Thukydides (n. 455 – 395)

Ennemän on tämmöistä hiljasta eloa. Paljon ollaan tässä yksin. Ajatuksien kanssa. Kivojakin ajatuksia."

Paikka: Metsä luo näkyvää. Puita, maata ja pieniä lampaita.

Hengailen käyttävällä ja yhtäkkiä joku asukas saa minut houkuteltua huoneeseensa ja tarjoilee minulle rypäleitä.

"Meillä on aikaa.

Pakko on tottua uuteen paikkaan.

Kun en pääse liikkumaan, en ole vapaa.
Mielikuvitus riittää vanhuksille.

Nukkuminen ja syöminen ovat meidän työ."

Nyt on minun aikani mennä nukkumaan.

Kaksi nukkuu samassa huoneessa. Hoitajat tulevat.

A search for the everyday
I am not the only one that is first day at work. Summer has just started and therefore there are many summerholiday-workers here. Still everyhting has to get done and at the same time the new people need to get to know the house and the routine. It is a good time for me to get to know the place for real as well.

Kajalakoti is this year 70 years old. Even though there are many new workers during the summer, there are many who has been here a long time. Marjatta Halkilahti, the director, has been here 40 years. A safe atmosphere, but the hills just outside the garden are steep and there is always the danger that someone might fall. There are around 60 inhabitants at Kajalakoti, and the house is organized into two units. As far as possible they have their own room, but some people share room. The house is made like a square and in the middle there is a closed garden, which gets off course very hot during summer. Kerttu and Liisa, who share a room, told me that if you walk the hallways around once you have walked 400 meters. They every now and then do a round to keep exercising and the blood running. I guess long hallways are a must to keep fit. Being used to bicycle at least 20 km a day, I feel the hallways could have been even longer. During rush hour, before and after meals, there is often traffic jams in the hallways.

About traffic jams; before I came here my friend said that coming to live in an old folks home can be compared to driving 100 km an hour on the highway and then suddenly take off to a smaller road. This is true when I approach the place from the point of view of the people living here, but not from the workers side.

8 am Breakfast.
11:30 am Lunch.
2 pm Coffee.
4 pm Dinner.
6 pm Evening meal.

Waking up. Clothes. Lifting. Cleaning. Moving. Sauna. Feeding. Picking up dropped hats. Changing. Toilet. Keeping track of medicines. Brushing teeth. Reporting.

Of those above things I have only picked up a dropped hat today. Apart from living the daily life, I spend time together with one and one person. How do I avoid it to feel forced? How do I listen? What do we do? It all depends. Being together is a process, just like this project, and processes can also be hard.

I ask questions, listen, read aloud, go outside, look at pictures, misunderstand and sometimes we laugh. I am interested in places. What landscape is of importance in your life? Where do you feel at home, anywhere and also here at Kajalakoti? Where do you feel free? What is freedom?

The secret of hapiness is freedom,
The secret of freedom is braveness
Thukydides (n. 455 – 395)

"I have been here so long that I have been here. It is good to be here. Here we are like one of the same people. My favourite place is my room because there I can be alone even if I connection to others. This is my home this time.
I have very little connection to those that decide about this house, I am just living here."

I read aloud from her book: ”..go bravely and face the future"

"They are those kind of words that talk a lot. We all need to be brave when we are not together with your own people. When we are in a place like this where there are many strangers and we need to get along with them all. For that we need to be brave and have a lot of understandin. Here we live together even if we are strangers. We get along well. There is no working field where we go together for work. There is more silence and just being here. We are a lot alone. With our thoughts. Also nice thoughts.

Place: There is an opening in the forest. Trees, land and small sheep.

I hang around in the hallways and suddenly a person living here invites me to her room and offers me grapes.

"We have time. Our work is to eat and lay down."

It was a big relief for my eldest daughter when I got place at the old folks home. She was always wondering when she called me, will she answer the phone or not?
You have to get used to the new place.

When I am not able to move, I am not free.
Imagination is enough for old people.

To sleep and eat is our job."

Now is time for me to sleep.

To sover på samme rom.

Denne settningen fant jeg litt morsom:A safe atmosphere, but the hills just outside the garden are steep and there is always the danger that someone might fall.

Nice work Kristina. It takes some time to settle in and get used to people. I spent 2 weeks at old people's home...us of 1977 like to retire early... :-) - quite scary just sitting with someone and just starring - but they really see it worth as gold. Ciao Edwin
